Hep cats and cool kittens, get ready to swing. The 31st Jazz Festival in Pensacola presented by the Jazz Society of Pensacola is coming soon. It is scheduled for April 5 and 6 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in Seville Square. JazzFest is a free, family-oriented festival that celebrates all types of jazz and attracts approximately 16,000 enthusiastic listeners over the weekend. The music will include a variety of jazz styles, presented by prominent national, regional and local artists, as well as area college and high school jazz bands. There is even a “Kids Jam with Harmonicas and Kazoos” each afternoon for the children. In addition, an arts and crafts exhibition is included to enhance the festival atmosphere and add value for our attendees. The event is presented as a gift to the community from Jazz Society members and its sponsors, and funds are raised in various ways throughout the year. More than $10,000 is raised from both Jazz Society member and non-member donors who are dedicated to this annual event. Headliners for JazzFest include Boulder, Colo., native, keyboardist/composer Lao Tizer; Terry “Doc” Handy, who soulfully operates musical greatness on the conga drums; and The 4th Ward Afro-Klezmer Orchestra, which is a nine-piece klezmer-funk-rock-jazz ensemble that performs original compositions and arrangements combining West African rhythms with Eastern European klezmer melodies.
