In June of 2011, the Pensacola City Council unanimously voted to allow Mayor Ashton Hayward to negotiate a lease for Bruce Beach with the Florida Wildlife Conservation Commission to build a fish hatchery. Council President Maren DeWeese made the motion, which specified that the hatchery would have a circulating aquaculture system; an integrated coastal plant production system; and a venue for public outreach, education and conservation. Councilman P.C. Wu seconded it. It passed with Sam Hall absent. Soon, city staff are expected to bring the final lease back to council for consideration.
