The boil-water advisory could be lifted later today for the area of Pensacola bounded by Interstate 10, Tippin and 12th avenues, and Escambia and Pensacola bays.

That mandatory advisory was issued in connection with the collapse of a section of Scenic Highway. Emerald Coast Utilities Authority spokeswoman Nathalie Bowers said the first set of samples returned back clear. The second set of samples taken 24 hours later should be coming out of the lab about 3 p.m.

“They’re looking good,” Bowers says. “It’s rare that the second set is bad after the first one is good.”

Whenever there is a water main break, ECUA takes samples upstream, downstream, and at the point of the break, twice. It takes 24 hours for each set of samples to culture. “The law allows us to lift (an advisory) after the first one, we think it’s prudent to wait for the second one,” Bowers says, because if the second set of samples comeback and show a problem and an advisory issued again, “that’s so much more confusing for our customers.”
