Family night takes STEM turn

NEWS RELEASE -- A STEM-themed family literacy night at Lincoln Park Primary School kicks off a busy week of events at Escambia County schools.

The event begins at 5 p.m. on May 19 and offers students, parents and community members alike the chance to engage in "hands-on, mind-on” activities that integrate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in a fun and exciting learning environment.  Details: Call 494-5620.

May 20

·         The Jim C. Bailey Middle School choral and art departments present Bremen Town Musicians, Stone Soup and Gallery Night from 5 to 7 p.m. Featured will be student art; a jazz performance (5:00-5:30 p.m.); Bremen Town Musicians (5:30 p.m.); and Stone Soup (6:15 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria).  There will also be artists from local galleries selling art and doing demonstrations throughout the evening.  Details: Call 492-6136.

·         The Melodic Minors Chorus of Molino Park Elementary School will present “Make A Difference” at 6 p.m. in the school’s cafetorium.  Everyone is invited to attend this concert featuring songs about how even the little things can help make the world a better place.  Details: Call 587-5265.

·         Longleaf Elementary School students will participate in a school wide science fair.  Parents are invited to visit the school from 6:00-7:30 p.m. to take a look and hear about class and individual projects in which the students have completed. Details: Call 941-6110.

-- The K-Kids from Blue Angels Elementary School are collecting relief items for flood victims. Needed items: scouring pads, sponges, disinfectant dish soap, dust masks, latex gloves, work gloves, heavy duty trash bags, insect repellent, sunscreen, air freshener, paper towels, plastic spray bottles, and hand sanitizer. May 21

·         Booker T. Washington High School’s Marine Science Academy’s Marine Science II Honors will present their second annual presentation outlining their assessment of “Diversity and Abundance of Nearshore Species.”  MSA students will discuss Restoration projects; this event will also include a short update of  “Bringing Back the Bayous.”  In addition, Seagrant Agent Rick O’Connor will address additional “Bringing Back the Bayous” sites and projects.  This event begins at noon in the school’s auditorium.

May 22

·         Sherwood Elementary School’s Partner in Education, Penn State Alumni Association Emerald Coast Chapter, will sponsor a DJ Dance Accelerated Reader Party.  The party is for Sherwood Elementary students who have worked hard to make it to the final AR Party of the Year.  The dance will be held from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.  Details: Call 453-7420.

·         McMillan Pre-K Center will host a "Family Fun Night” from 6 to 7:30 p.m.  The center will offer an educational awareness training, three make-and-take stations (Phonological Awareness, Mathematics and Oral Language/Vocabulary) and a Subway dinner for McMillan families.  Each make-and-take station will give parents the opportunity to create a fun game that they will take home. In addition, each student will receive a copy of the book called “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!”  Details: Call Heather Buehler, Stella McKinney or Gracey Dunmore, 595-6910.

·         Beulah Elementary School's fourth- and fifth-grade students will present the musical "We Haz Jazz."  The performance will be held in the cafeteria.  Details: Call 941-6180.

·         Global Learning Academy will host the second annual Culture Fair.  Students will share with the community what they have learned about the continent they have studied.  There will be music, dance, art, and facts shared about each continent. The presentations will be held in the pod for each grade level.  This is an all-day event with the following schedule:

8:00-8:30 a.m.           North America                       5th Grade

8:45-9:15 a.m.           South America                  4th Grade

9:30-10:00 a.m.         Africa                                     3rd Grade

12:00-12:30 p.m.      Asia                                        1st Grade

May 23

·         ESOL students from Cathy Morrison’s class at Bellview Middle School will be sharing the English Language Learners created/published lighthouse books with Vicki Murphy’s ESOL students at Oakcrest Elementary School, 10:30 a.m., as part of a service learning and language acquisition grant. Ms. Morrison received the grant from the Grants for Excellence office.

May 24

·         Pensacola High School’s alumni varsity cheerleaders of Classes 2006 and 2007 will host a clothing drive for flood victims.  All collected new and gently used clothing, shoes and hygiene products will be distributed. The event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Pensacola High School. Details: Call Nathorna McCreary, 485-0884.

May 23 and 24: 

·         C.A. Weis Elementary School will present a dinner and dessert theatre by fifth-grade students. The dinner theatre is May 23; the dessert theatre is May 24. Both performances will begin at 6:30 p.m.  Details: Call Cathy S. Melton, Music Specialist, at 595-6888.

May 27

·         The New Orleans Saints will be hosting a Junior Training Camp for 110 Global Learning Academy’s third, fourth, and fifth grade students at the school beginning at 12:30 p.m.  Students will be selected based on citizenship. Selected students will hear from members of the Saints team and practice some of the same drills that the Saints do during their training camp.

May 29:

·         Warrington Middle School will have their eighth grade graduation ceremony at 6 p.m.  in the school’s gymnasium.
