Local students finished strong at National History Day competition

Two Escambia County students made it to the final round of judging at the 2014 National History Day event at the University of Maryland.

Nearly 3,000 students competed from June 15-19 at the event.

Holly Gorton, a junior at Pensacola High School and Sara Buchanan, an eighth-grader at Bellview Middle School, made it to the final round of judging.

Gorton finished eighth in the senior individual exhibit category for her project, “Pullman Porters Pave the Way for Civil Rights.”

Buchanan finished 12th in the Junror Historical Paper category with her entry, “Gideon v Wainwright: The Right to Counsel.”

Also competing were Allison Shumpert and Logan Reeder (Episcopal Day School) in the Junior Group Performance and Drew Anderson and Sara Fuller (Pensacola Catholic) in the Senior Group Website category.
