More than a quarter of a million dollars has been awarded to Escambia County to diversify the economy and to enhance military missions at Pensacola Naval Air Station and protect it from encroachment. Escambia County was one of 12 counties to receive a $200,000 Defense Reinvestment Grant. It was given to support relationships between military installations and their community. The Greater Pensacola Chamber received $66,000 to help protect military installations and promote economic diversification strategies in communities that depend on defense. Gov. Rick Scott said the investments are necessary to protect jobs and the quality of life for citizens in Escambia County. “We thank Florida’s service men and women for their dedication to protecting Florida families, and we will continue to support our military families,” Scott said. The Defense Infrastructure Grant is given to local projects that benefit the community and is considered to have a positive impact on the value of the military installation. More than $2.4 million was awarded to 14 Florida communities to help protect and improve 19 installations and increase Florida’s standing as one of the most military friendly states in the nation. The Florida Defense Grants Programs are administered by Enterprise Florida Inc. They are awarded annually through a competitive process to communities that have military installations.
