The Florida Department of Health in Escambia County has joined the City of Pensacola Parks and Recreation’s Adopt-a-Park Program. Last week, Health Department employees cleaned up the shoreline at Sanders Beach as part of “Florida Health Cleans Up!”. The statewide initiative encourages FDOH employees to form teams and regularly participate in local clean-up activities. Across the state at least twice a year, almost 120 miles will be “swept” by these teams, including more than 17 miles of state highway, 25 miles of city streets, 12 miles of trails, 178 acres of parks, and 34 miles of shoreline. “As we restore some of Florida’s wonderful highways, streets, trails, parks, and shorelines, this project will put the spotlight on the importance of healthy choices to prevent trash in the first place,” said Dr. John Armstrong, state Surgeon General and Secretary of Health. The Department’s goal is to encourage physical activity and walking while emphasizing how small choices affect your health and environment.
