Manna Food Pantries is getting a new home. The Pensacola food bank this week acquired property at the site of the former Escambia County School District textbook depot between North Hayne and North Tarragona streets. Manna paid $125,000 for the 4.5-acre parcel that will become the organization’s new main facility. “This is a huge milestone for Manna,” said DeDe Flounlacker, executive director. “This location will give us the opportunity to move out of the flood-prone area we’re currently in and gives us space to think about a new facility to serve the hungry in Pensacola.” [caption id="attachment_7374" align="alignright" width="300"]April flood severely damaged Manna Food Pantries April flood severely damaged Manna Food Pantries[/caption] Manna’s building was severely damaged and its food supply diminished during the flood in April. The community, however rose to the organization’s rescue, donating enough money and food to replace most of what was lost in the flood. Because of the flood damage, however, Manna staff was forced to working out of makeshift construction trailers and its service to the area’s needy and hungry was hampered. With the purchase of property for a new location, Manna has hired local architect Ben Townes to design a new warehouse and office. Once the design work is completed and approved, construction estimates will be determined, and pending board approval, construction on the new building will begin. “The staff and board of directors are committed to moving Manna to this more suitable location to serve the hungry in the community,” said Jay Bradshaw, president of the board of directors. “Together, with the community’s help, we can rebuild Manna to make sure no one is left unfed.” Manna Food Pantries has been serving the community since 1983. Last year, the food bank distributed 800,000 pounds of food to the hungry, serving more than 42,000 people. Manna is a private, non-profit corporation dedicated to alleviating hunger in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties To donate, volunteer or for more information, visit mannafoodpantries.org.
