Holiday events ring in the season

With the holiday season in full gear, Escambia County schools are spreading holiday cheer. Schools throughout the county are celebrating the holiday season through songs, art and plays. Others are showing their Christmas spirit by raising money for toys, gifts and food, showing that it is indeed better to give than receive. Here are a list of holiday events and activities to help spread the joy of the Christmas season: Gifts from Other Cultures N. B. Cook Elementary School of the Arts presents "Gifts from Other Cultures," an original seasonal play reflecting various celebrations during the holiday season. Performances are Tuesday at 8.45 a.m. and 6.30 p.m.; Thursday at 8.45 a.m. 6.30 p.m.  Spirit Night at Chick-fil-A Students from Ransom Middle School are hosting a Spirit Night at the Chick-fil-A on Nine Mile Road to help Toys for Tots. Participants should notify cashiers so a percentage of the purchase will go into a fund for Toys for Tots. Toys and cash donations will be collected by students and Marines.  Donations may also be dropped off at the school ahead of time. Tate’s Chorus Winter Concert Tate High School’s Mixed Chorus, Cantus Women’s Chorus and Tate’s Vocal Ensemble on Tuesday will be performing several selections, including jazz, classical, pop, gospel songs as well as holiday favorites. The concert will include 100 voices joining together to perform the “Hallelujah Chorus” from Handel’s “Messiah.” The performance will be held at 7 p.m., at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 800  E. Nine Mile Road. Tickets are $3 pre-sale and $5 at the door. Children age 6 and under are admitted for free. Workman Middle School Chorus will have a Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. Tuesday. For more details, contact the school at 494-5665. Workman Middle School Jazz Performances The J. H. Workman Middle School Jazz Ensemble will perform on Wednesday at Holm and Semmes elementary schools.  The Jazz Ensemble will perform at the Hall Center on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. The Workman Middle School Holiday Band Concert will be held at 7 p.m. For details, contact Workman Middle School at 494-5665. Jingle Bell Jog at Bratt Bratt Elementary School students will participate in a Jingle Bell Jog on Thursday from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. For more information, contact the school at 327-6137. “You’ve Got Mail” Performance "You’ve Got Mail,” a Christmas Holiday program will be presented By C.A. Weis’ fifth grade students at 9 a.m. on Thursday . For more information, call 595-6888. ESOL Food Festival The English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) class at Bellview Middle School will hold a Food Festival on Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This festival is the culminating event of a language and vocabulary acquisition unit featuring winter holidays and weather concepts. Hellen Caro Choir performance The Hellen Caro Choir will perform in the cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. for friends and family.  For details, contact the school at 492-0531. Gallery Night at Tate High School Tate High School’s Art Department is presenting the 2014 Gallery Night on Thursday from 5 pm. To 7 p.m.. An opportunity to purchase student work also will be available. Mediums represented include drawing, painting, mixed media, photography, digital arts, jewelry, ceramics, and sculpture. There will also be a silent auction and refreshments will be provided. Artwork may be previewed on Wednesday. For details, contact the school at 937-2300. Chorus performance at Ransom  Ransom Middle School’s Chorus will perform on Thursday at 7 p.m., in Tate High School’s cafeteria. For details, call 937-2220. Snowman Walk at N. B. Cook N.B. Cook Elementary School will participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Students are encouraged to dress like a snowman (scarves, top hats, mittens, etc.) and pay $1 to raise money for JDRF. The funds raised are used for research to help eliminate Type 1 diabetes. Students in grades K-2 will walk from 8:30-9:30 a.m. and grades third through fifth will walk from 9:15-9:45 a.m. at the park across from the old Sacred Heart Hospital.
