Teams from Woodham and Brown Barge middle schools travel this weekend to Auburn University to compete in the 2014 South’s BEST Robotics Competition on Saturday and Sunday. To qualify to compete at this level of competition, both teams had to first compete against 14 other area middle school and high school robotics teams at the eighth annual Emerald Coast BEST Robotics Competition on Oct. 25, at the University of West Florida. Robotics clubs give students interested in science and engineering a chance to explore the worlds of math, science, engineering, marketing, construction, computers, programming, web design, among other things, while building a remote-controlled robot for competition. Woodham Middle School’s team earned second place in the Exhibit and Interview category of the competition and placed first in the Website Design competition. Their team was also judged on their marketing presentation, engineering notebook and spirit and sportsmanship as competitors for the BEST Award. The students drove their robot to to a sixth-place finish in the robotics competition and performed well in all other categories and earned second place honors in the BEST Award. This distinction afforded the team the opportunity to compete at the South’s BEST Regional Competition for the sixth consecutive year. Team members are: Genecis Arcadia, Jon Beck, Tristan Bradshaw, Nick Collum, Shelby Cornett, Brittany Cupp, Brandon Daniel, Clara Daniel, Nicholas David, Trinity Dixon, Michael Garza, Aaliyah Grant, Koda Hardy, Richard Harrah, Riley Helmken, Daisia Hensley, Madeline Houser, Max Houser, Mickel Jackson, Alexis Jones, Brian Jones, Ashlyn Lang, Jayla Malllory, Javontae Manning, Lydia Ramjust, Jacob Reed, Spiritual Rigsby, Kialandre Rivers, Jalyn Scott, Taylor Self, Shydirah Shoecraft, Andrelle Smith, Brittanie Spears, Aneshia thicklin, Tymia Thompkins, Bobby Vose, Diamond Weaver, DeAndre Williams, and Tiana Williams. Woodham Middle School’s team will be competing against the top 50 BEST Robotics teams east of the Mississippi River, including Pensacola’s Brown Barge Middle School. The Brown Barge team will also be traveling to Auburn this weekend to compete. They secured their spot when their robot reached second place at UWF. The competitions are designed to inspire students to pursue careers involving STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). They spent six weeks designing, constructing, programming, rehearsing, organizing and perfecting their robotics skills. The hard work culminated in a performance that earned the school their slot in the South's Best Championship. This is the first time a team from Brown Barge will be competing at the South B.E.S.T. competition. Their team members are: Belinda Zhou, Matt Grove, Baine Roy, Manny Manosca, Courtlyn Hess, Robin Hughes, Micheal Dixon, Krigorn Parr, Raelin Dominque, Michael Rodgers, Maicol Parr, Richie Dong, Faith Sellers, Anarose Oliver, Parker Hassebrock, Nolan Cooke, Nolan Fajordo, and John Dixon.
