Congressman Jeff Miller and several other dignitaries were on hand at the T.T. Wentworth Museum Thursday morning to unveil a portrait of Spanish General Bernardo de Gálvez, whose forces defeated the British in the 1781 Battle of Pensacola. In recognition of the aid his victory gave America during the Revolutionary War, Gálvez was recently named an honorary citizen of the United States by an act of Congress. He joins a rarefied club of only seven other honorary U.S. citizens, including Winston Churchill and Lafayette. The portrait of Gálvez was painted by local artist Nina Fritz. Also in attendance were Francisco Tardio, cultural attaché for Spain in Florida; Dr. Judy Bense, president of the University of West Florida; Maria Davis, honorary vice consul of Spain; Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward; and Juan Fontan, 1st Lt. Marine, Spanish Navy.
