College baseball back at Wahoos stadium

You don't have to wait for opening day to get a baseball fix at Pensacola Blue Wahoos stadium. The 2015 COX Diamond Invitational begins Feb. 20 at the Vince Whibbs Sr. Community Maritime Park. [sidebar] Ticket and game information is available at www.pensacolasports.com or by visiting the stadium’s ticket office. Saturday, Feb. 21 is Military Appreciation Day. Anyone accompanying a person with an active or retired military ID can get in for $5, a normal day pass is only $15. [/sidebar] Hosted by the Pensacola Sports Association, the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles, the Troy Trojans, the University of North Florida Ospreys, the Nicholls State Colonels, and the Saint Louis Billikens will play in a round-robin three-day tournament. Feb. 20-21 will each have three games per day (11 a.m., 3 p.m., and 7 p.m.), and two games will be played on Feb. 22 (11 a.m., 2:30 p.m.). “We are excited to bring back major Div. I college baseball to the Community Maritime Park,” said Ray Palmer, the Sports Association's executive director. “Last year’s games proved this area would support the teams. We think this new format will give the baseball fan even more quality baseball action.” Nicholls State head baseball coach Seth Thibodeaux said his team is honored to be part of the tournament. “We are excited to bring our team to Pensacola," Thibodeaux said. "We have some alumni there and we have some players on our team from the Pensacola area and I know they'll be excited to be coming home to play in front of friends and family." Troy University head baseball coach Bobby Pierce said last year's experience at the tournament was so great that coming back was a "no-brainer." “The quality of teams for the weekend and the fabulous venue should make for an outstanding weekend of college baseball," he said.
