On Tuesday, February 24th, about 70 voting members of the Escambia County Democratic Executive Committee (DEC) voted in seven new officers along with re-electing three officers. Michael Lowery, 49, was voted in unanimously as Chairman replacing former Chairwoman Cassandra McAway. Lowery is the President/Business Agent of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1395 which represents Escambia County transit workers and also he was the former 2014 Democratic candidate for County Commission District 4. On the same ticket as the new Chairman was newly elected Vice Chairwoman Clorissti Johnson Mitchell, 44, who works for Aylstock, Witkin, Kreis & Overholtz, PLC, and was past North Florida Field Organizer for the “Charlie Crist for Governor” campaign. The new leaders plan to strengthen the local Democratic Party by increasing Democratic voter turnout, getting young people involved and reaching out to current Democratic voters prior to the 2016 election. “Clorissti and I will focus on registering new voters, educating and organizing our base, and working hard to improve our local party status,” states Lowery. District 2’s Escambia County Commissioner Candidate in 2014, Deb Moore was elected DEC Secretary, and District 2 State Representative Candidate Jeremy Lau, assumed the DEC State Committeeman position. Elected for the first time for DEC Steering Committee Officers were Mary Ann Andrews and past DEC Chairwoman Evalyn Narramore. Re-elected as Treasurer was Tom Brown and Steering Committee Officers Dianne Krumel, Bill King and Jack Cerone. Chairman Lowery’s first action was to appoint Janelle Rouse, 18, as DEC teller.
