Game Recap: Ice Flyers win in OT

The Pensacola Ice Flyers defeated the Havoc in overtime with a final score of 5-4 on Sunday night in Huntsville for their third straight win. The first goal of the match came late in the opening period from Justin Fillion for his first of the season to make it 1-0 in favor of the Ice Flyers. [sidebar] To celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Miracle on Ice with the 980 U.S. Olympic men's hockey team, the Ice Flyers will be hosting "A Night with Jim Craig" at the Pensacola Bay Center during the game on Feb. 17 at 6:35 p.m. Tickets are on sale at the Rodizio Grill Box Office at the Bay Center and online at ticketmaster.com. [/sidebar] Huntsville's Jacob Johnstone evened the score at the 7:10 mark of the second on the power play. Joe Tolles and Luke Greiner would add two more goals for the Havoc and the Ice Flyers found themselves down 3-1 after forty minutes of play. Fifty-three seconds into the final period, Shaun Arvai moved Pensacola within one with a goal assisted by Fillion. Nearing the halfway mark of the third, Nick Larson made it an even contest at 3-3 with his unassisted goal. With 6:41 remaining in regulation, the Ice Flyers retook the lead with a goal by Corey Banfield from Steve Bergin. As time wound down, Huntsville pulled Kevin Genoe from the net for the extra attacker with fifty-eight seconds remaining. Just ten seconds later, Havoc's Luke Greiner found the back of the net to tie the game up yet again. Time would run out and the match would have to be settled in OT. Overtime would be decided fifty-two seconds in as Larson would score for his second of the game and the Ice Flyers would win 5-4. Max Strang turned away 28 of 32 shots faced and earned his 18th win of the season. The Ice Flyers are now 20-13-5 and remain in sixth place in the SPHL with 45 points and are right behind the RiverKings, Cottonmouths and Ice Gators who are all tied in the standings with 46 points.
