Pensacola’s crime rate fell 8 percent in 2014, to one of the lowest levels in recent history, according to the Pensacola Police Department annual crime report. The Escambia Sheriff's Office, too, reported an overall drop in the crime rate as well. The data showed the number of violent crimes in Pensacola decreased by 5.1 percent, from 745 in 2013 to 701 in 2014. The Pensacola Police Department investigated three homicides in 2014 and again in 2013. “Not only does this show a decrease in violent and nonviolent crimes within city limits, but also it reflects the outstanding work done on a daily basis by our officers,” said Chief Chip W. Simmons. Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward echoed Simmons, saying that public safety is his number one priority. “My administration has worked tirelessly to reduce crime over the last four years,” Hayward said. “I am thrilled to see these efforts yield an 8-percent reduction following last year’s double-digit reduction.” The Florida Department of Law Enforcement annually reviews, records and releases the department’s report with those from other law enforcement agencies statewide. “I believe the figures indicate we have had some successes with regard to some of the initiatives we have implemented,” Simmons said. “From a historical perspective, these numbers reflect the lowest crime rate on record.” Among crime-reduction initiatives implemented by the PPD are concentrated patrols in specific areas to address problems such as burglaries and drugs, a partnership with other law enforcement agencies on the Gun Crime Response Team and the use of overtime to combat emerging crime trends Download the crime rate chart with all the data here
