Body cameras won't be coming to the Santa Rosa Sheriff's Office for the time being.

Sheriff Wendell Hall said that in general the use of cameras in law enforcement serves a purpose in protecting both the public and officers and it can capture important behaviors which can be beneficial to the criminal justice process."

But, Hall says, that there are too many questions about the use of body cameras for him to be comfortable deploying them with his deputies.

“These systems can be used for the protection of the public as well as the protection of officers. On occasion, equipment.

"The questions range from a person’s basic constitutional rights to the storage of video and the usage of the equipment," Hall said in a statement. "Based on this, we are currently not looking into purchasing body-cam type equipment.

"This may certainly change in the future as these issues are addressed my lawmakers.”

Today, the Pensacola Police Department began rolling out body cameras for their uniform patrol officers.
