A House panel Wednesday is expected to take up a proposal that would revamp the state's red-light camera law, including the possibility of banning citations for drivers who make right-hand turns.

The House Highway & Waterway Safety Subcommittee will consider a bill (PCB HWSS 15-05) that would change a 2010 state red-light camera law.

Along with placing a prohibition on citations for right-hand turns, the bill also calls for restrictions on how local governments can use money they receive from violations.

Citations carry $158 penalties, with local governments receiving $75 and the rest going to state programs.

Under the bill, the local portion would have to be spent on public-safety initiatives, which could include the costs of red-light camera programs. The bill also would include other changes, such as requiring that violation notices be sent by certified mail, rather than the current first-class mail.
