Little Free Libraries are promoting reading among children and their families at area schools. Pensacola State College students installed the Little Free Libraries at Bellview, Sherwood and Scenic Heights elementary schools. The months-long project ended on March 6 with the placement of the fourth Little Free Library at the PSC Child Care Center. The Little Free Library project is a national movement that puts free books in a small, house-shaped “library” that is usually placed in front of schools or homes. Children are encouraged to take and leave books as they please. Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society students worked with students in the carpentry program to complete the project. Carpentry students built the little libraries with materials donated by the carpentry program. PTK officers, library_2 Phi Theta Kappa members held a campus-wide book drive to collect books for the libraries, raised money for paint supplies, and hand painted the libraries. Society members also will be checking the libraries periodically to bring more books and ensure that the libraries are maintained. Members of Phi Theta Kappa wanted to give back to the community by promoting literacy as a doorway to higher education, according to adviser Jessica Petersen. They are hoping that through literacy these children will have the same opportunity of attending college that our PTK members have now,” Petersen said.
