It's official: Publix is coming to East Hill. The sale of the former A.V. Clubbs Middle School property on East Cervantes Street closed last week and officials at Publix confirmed they have signed a lease to build a neighborhood grocery store on the site. Clearwater-based White Development Co., President Jim White confirmed Tuesday he has bought the property for $1.135 million. Dwaine Stevens, spokesman with Publix, confirmed they have signed a lease with White Development to put a store on the site. Sherry Morris, planning services administrator for the City of Pensacola, said her department expects to receive development order permit applications from White Development in the next few weeks. "There's no reason to think this project is not moving along well," she said. The Clubbs property is the largest of three properties White now owns that occupy an entire city block. Clubbs closed as a school in 2010 as an alternative middle school. The property faces Cervantes Street on the south, Strong Street on the north, and is between 11th and 12th avenues east and west. White said his company has invested nearly $3 million to acquire the entire block. "This is an exciting project," White said. "The neighborhood is going to be happy, not only what we're doing as developer, but also what the user is doing. It's going to be very cool."
