Pamela Homyak was recently chosen as the Big Sister of the Year for the State of Florida. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Florida, the mentoring program that connected Homyak to her "little," Skylar, has matched mentors with kids who need them for the last 26 years. [sidebar] Get involved It takes as little as two times a month to make a lasting difference in a child’s life and start them on a path to success. Mentors can choose to see their little through the school-based program, where you meet with a child at his/her school one hour a week; or through the community-based program, where you spend time with the child wherever you would like to in the community two to four times a month. To become a big, contact Big Brothers Big Sisters staff at 850-433-KIDS (5437). Must be willing to commit to the life of a child for one year from the date of match, (screening will take two-six weeks). Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters served 604 children in Northwest Florida. Homyak knew the powerful impact of mentorship first-hand. She grew up in an abusive home and sought out role models for guidance. She chose to use her personal experience to help other children. Skyler was only 10 years old when she and Homyak met five years ago. At the time and was dealing with many family issues. The bond was instant. Throughout the years, Homyak encouraged a shy Skyler to break out of her shell by engaging in new experiences, from attending the National Flight Academy camp to playing tennis and even fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Above all, education is the top priority, Homyak consistently tells Skyle: "Education is the way to make your dreams come true, but most importantly; there are two things that no one can take away from you...your faith and your education." Skyler is now enrolled in honors classes and Homyak is helping her achieve the requirements for Florida's Bright Future College Scholarship Program. "Without Pamela in my life I wouldn't be where I am today" writes Skyler. "She has been someone who I've looked up to for advice and help over these short, yet long, five years." Homyak is now in the running for National Big of the Year, which is decided at the end of March 2015.
