Local, non-profit K-12 school East Hill Academy (EHA), whose main campus is located at 635 West Garden Street, Pensacola, will break ground on a two-story classroom expansion funded in part by a 2014 grant from Impact 100. Founded in 2002, EHA provides individualized, diploma-oriented education for children on the autism spectrum and with other learning disorders. They serve children at two campuses: the Garden Street campus in downtown Pensacola and a second campus in Milton, Florida. During their 13 year history, more than 1,000 children have been served at EHA. The classroom expansion will be a space to teach autistic children who are non-conversational. Increased demand for this highly-specialized, individual education prompted East Hill Academy to apply for an Impact 100 grant in 2014. EHA Director Barbara Barber noted, “The non-conversational children on our waiting list have few community resources. They are often left in an educational and social “holding pattern” if we are not able to enroll them, despite typically having average to above average intelligence. With this new classroom expansion, generously funded in part by Impact 100, we anticipate being able to serve these children within the year. Our goal -- and our success -- has been getting them comfortable, conversant and into mainstream public education classrooms on grade-level within 3 years at EHA, on average.” The public is invited to the groundbreaking ceremony which will take place on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 10:00 am at the Garden Street Campus.
