Hunter Walker, who has served as Santa Rosa County's county administrator for two decades, is retiring this year. The County Commission is set to discuss finding his replacement at its regular meeting on Monday. "I will be 65 years old and will have completed my 20th year of service as County Administrator," Walker wrote in a memo to commissioners. "I would expect that the recruitment of the next county administrator will take approximately four to five months, possibly longer depending on availability and potential length of notice to current employer of the successful candidate." Walker was hired as Santa Rosa County's third county administrator on Oct. 23, 1995. His current salary is $132,412 annually, with a vehicle allowance of $500 a month. As county administrator, Walker reports directly to the County Commission. He is responsible for managing the day-to-day-activities of county government, including the roads and bridges department, the county's library system, emergency management, code enforcement, development review, and numerous other services. "Words cannot express my deep appreciation to this Board and to all past Boards of Commissioners for the honor of serving as the Santa Rosa County Administrator," Walker wrote. "It has been my privilege to lead an outstanding management team and workforce under the various Boards of Commissioners." Walker will present commissioners with options on how to proceed with recruiting a new administrator. Under his proposed timeline, a new administrator could be chosen by Nov. 12.
