Until now, people in the Perdido Key area looking for the fresh produce and other local flavors have had to drive the 45 minutes or so to farmers markets in downtown Pensacola or Foley, Ala. But starting June 20, they’ll have an option right in their own back yard with the grand opening of the Perdido Farmers Market, located at Baars Field, 13001 Sorrento Road, behind Winn Dixie in the Park Plaza Shopping Center. The market will be open every Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. The first day will include a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. and live entertainment by local musician Lauren Kay along with other festivities for the entire family. The market is a project of the Perdido Key Chamber of Commerce. [sidebar] For more information about the Perdido Farmers Market, email [email protected] or visit their Facebook page. Vendor spaces are still available for $15 per Saturday. Vendors applications are available here. We feel like now is a good time to do it because we’re growing. This time, we’re really putting a lot of effort into it. We want it to last.” The market will feature fresh fruits and vegetables, homemade goods, collectibles, local artists’ work, prepared food and more. Amanda Castillo, who is coordinating the market with Kathleen Leidner, said she’s hoping for 25 to 50 vendors on opening day. “They’re mostly local. A lot of them are from Perdido. We’re going to have some honey from here in Perdido,” Castillo said. “We’re got several artists from right here in Perdido. Some of our farmers, as far as our produce, are coming from Baldwin County.”
