Dean Debolt of the UWF University Archives and West Florida History Center, University of West Florida Libraries, shared a little bit of Pensacola history for the Fourth of July. Excerpted from "Pensacola Tourists: Famous and Infamous" by Debolt: There is perhaps no other American that exemplifies the “Fourth of July” like John Philip Sousa. His marches, and “Stars and Stripes Forever” ring throughout the nation everywhere on Independence Day. Pensacola_High_1922Sousa visited Pensacola twice to perform, both concerts at the newly built Pensacola High School First on Jan. 31, 1922, and again on Feb. 12, 1924. He was a guest at the Pensacola Rotary Club for lunch for both visits. At the Pensacola concert in 1924, Sousa’s band also performed the local favorite “Down Pensacola Way.”
