With the first day of school just around the corner, Florida’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday is back with extended days and more items available for savings.

Florida lawmakers in June passed a bill extending this year’s sales tax holiday from three days to 10.

Starting Friday, Aug. 7 through Aug. 16, tax-free week’s 10-day extension matches the longest back-to-school shopping holiday since its inception in 1998.

It allows Florida shoppers two full weekends with no taxes on back-to-school supplies, clothing and so much more.

Florida is among 18 states that have weeks, weekends or days during the month of August when shoppers can buy items without a sales tax, which means less spending and more savings.

It is estimated that parents will spend an average of $873 per child and more than $1,100 for college students, according to a Consumer Pulse Survey from the Rubicon Project.

That’s one reason why it is sensible for families to take advantage of the savings during the tax free holiday week.

Among he qualified items are clothing, footwear and certain accessories selling for $100 or less per item, certain school supplies selling for $15 or less per item and personal computers and certain computer-related accessories on the first $750 of the sale price, when bought for non-commercial home personal use.

The tax-free holiday does not apply to books that are not otherwise exempt, rentals or leases of qualified items, repairs or alterations of qualified items or sales of clothing, school supplies or computers and computer-related accessories sold in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging or airport.

Visit Florida's Department of Revenue website for a complete list of tax exempt items.
