What Millennials want from coaching

Other generations may think of them as needy and self-centered.

But one writer cites Gallup research that shows that many Millennials are entering the workforce without some key experiences that would make them better employees who feel more engaged in what they do.

Millennials are the generation born roughly between 1982 and the early 2000s.

This article on Inc.com says that Millennials are missing the mentoring and coaching that would make them better prepared for the workplace. Some are seeking out that mentoring on their own, but they are doing it their own way.

Specifically, Millennials are:

  1. — Actively avoiding preachy, older advisers who act like overbearing parents.
  2. — Skipping college career centers and blaming the school for not giving them proper career coaching as part of their curriculum.

Instead, their looking for career coaching resources that are:

  • — Free or inexpensive, usually a subscription model for budgeting purposes.
  • — Online and have 24/7 access, powered by video.
  • — Created and delivered by successful peers, or hip industry experts.
  • — Have a community component where they can connect with peers.
  • Smart companies will crack the Millennials coaching nut as quickly as they can: In the next decade, that age group will make a majority of the workforce.

Smart Pensacola area companies would be smart to look to Navy Federal Credit Union as a example of how capture and retain Millennial workers.
