In March of 2015, Bill Gross gave this TED Talk in Vancouver about what matters most for startup success.

Gross founded Idealab, a business incubator that in the last 20 years has helped launch more than 100 companies. He wanted to look at why some succeeded and other failed.

So much about a team's success is about adapting when "they get punched in the face by the customer," Gross said.

Gross said he looked at successes and failures that came from IdeaLab and from other areas.

The successes all shared smart timing, followed by the strength of the team and execution, the idea was third, Gross said.

AirB&B and Uber, CitySearch all hit the marketplace at a time when the market was ready for it. Startups that failed to catch on, most commonly, Gross says, didn't find the sweet spot of offering an idea right when consumers were ready and able to run with it.

"Execution matters a lot, the idea matters a lot. Timing matters more," Gross said. "Really look at whether consumers are ready for what you want to offer them."

If you are mulling your startup idea, or are ready to grow your existing small business, consider reserving your spot now at EntreCon 2016. The two-day conference for small business owners and entrepreneurs is set for Nov. 3-4 in downtown Pensacola.
