The West Florida Public Library System will celebrate September as Library Card Sign up Month.
Libraries are a valuable resource in our community offering services as varied as story time hours to expose young minds to the joy of reading and hands-on instruction in computer usage, as well as free access to books, magazines, CDs and DVDs.
Residents of Escambia County or active duty service members living in Escambia County can obtain a library card for the West Florida Public Library System free of charge.
The need for library services in this county is great.
According to data from the Florida Division of Library and Information Services, 14 percent of the population of Escambia County has a library card. In a county of 299,511 souls, only 42,950 of them have library cards.
In neighboring Santa Rosa County, 45,614 people have library cards. In a county of 155,390 people, that’s 29 percent usage rate.
