The cover of "P is for Pelican:The ABCs of Pensacola," which will be in the IMPACT Brain Bags.

As a child of the late 1970s and early 1980s, television probably had an undue influence on my life.

But, as one of my favorite characters from "The A-Team" used to say, I love it when a plan comes together.

One nice aspect of the Brain Bag project has been the chance to share what we hope will be the first of many books with new moms and babies.

In the Brain Bag — an early literacy gift bag that will be given to new moms at all three Escambia County birthing hospitals thanks to the support of IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area — is a copy of "P is for Pelican: The ABCs of Pensacola," by Anna Theriault.

We got to see a copy of the electronic proofs this week. Theriault's previous children's book is "Goodnight, Pensacola." Stores that carry that book — Storkland, Celebrations, Pizzaz, and Artesana — also will carry the ABCs book. She hopes to have them in stores by March 1.

The Pensacola author has created the book to showcase our community and the importance of building literacy skills early on in a child's life.

The book highlights each letter of the alphabet using a Pensacola landmark or location.

"B is for Blue Angels flying past the Beach Ball."

"H is for Historic Village always teaching us more."

"S is for Surfer catching spray with one hand."

"Z is for Zoom as cars fly around Five Flags Speedway."

It adds a lovely touch to Brain Bags, and encourages parents to look at these landmarks, and more, with new eyes.

Eyes that look for letters and shapes in the things we see everyday.

Eyes that look to heroes like Gen. Daniel "Chappie" James to show the children of today they can grow up in Pensacola and have the bright future that every child is entitled to.

Eyes that use our landscape and our landmarks as a way that our city can become an Early Learning City, where a child's education begins at birth and supported across the community.
