Two groups at the University of West Florida are teaming up to focus on regional workforce development. The University of West Florida Career Services and Haas Center are joining to meet the growing workforce demands in Northwest Florida through yearly projected regional and industry employment needs. The Haas Center this month distributed a survey on behalf of Career Services to determine high industry needs of the region and how to better prepare UWF students to enter the workforce. The survey was distributed to regional hiring officials who were identified by the Haas Center as chief workforce leaders and developers. The Haas Center conducted a regional economic overview for the Pensacola Metropolitan Statistical Area to assist with developing the survey. The overview was developed by using in-house data and relays information about local workforce and employment projections, which describes where the MSA will be over the next five years. “Professional readiness is the cornerstone of our efforts here at the university,” said Lauren Loeffler, UWF’s director of Career Services. “This project allows us to ensure we are educating our students to meet those demands.” Pending survey responses, the Haas Center will determine between eight to 12 companies and organizations, each representing various industries, to conduct in-person workplace interviews to better gauge data and survey responses. UWF Career Services plans to use the data to advance its liaison program. It is made up of staff members dedicated to serving UWF’s academic colleges by spearheading services, events and materials specific to each college’s students and programs. Career Services also will determine specific outreach efforts to best serve the underserved population by their resources and advance those outreach efforts to ensure the population needs are fully met. For more information or to participate in the survey, contact Lauren Loeffler at [email protected].
