The best way to handle bullying is to confront it. Warrington Middle School students and Cox Communications on Wednesday will take part in Cartoon Network’s “Stop Bullying: Speak Up” campaign. The anti-bullying rally aims to stamp out bullying by raising awareness, building partnerships and empowering young people. Starting at 9:30 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium. guest speakers, students and videos will help raise awareness of and talk about the dangers bullying. Malcolm Thomas, superintendent of Escambia schools, Lumon May, county commissioner, Regina Lipnick, school principal, and Dan Henson, executive vice president of operations for Cox Communications, are among several people who will speak at the rally. Students also will see a special video message on bullying from President Barack Obama. While bullying has been an issue in schools for years, cyberbullying is becoming a big problem among young people. Recent surveys by Cox Communications show that cyberbullying is on the rise. More than 63 percent of teenagers in Florida have reported being harassed or bullied online and/or witnessed someone else being bullied online, the survey revealed. On average, local teens report spending more than five hours online every day, and they often have experiences with bullying often exchanging roles day to day as either the bully, the victim or the bystander. “Technology is incorporated into many of our classes at Warrington Middle School,” Thomas said. “Participating in this event … allows us a chance to remind our students to be responsible users of the Internet and stress the importance of being respectful of all classmates whenever communicating about each other electronically.”
