Fifth-grader Zane Gurganus smiled as he walked around Ernest Ward Middle School during the open house with his father and sister. "It's huge and I am excited because there is a lot of stuff." Zane said. "You can have ice cream in the cafeteria and you don't have to use old stuff so it will be easier to learn." The Bratt Elemetary School student will start attending the new school next year. Faculty and staff spent part of the day showing off the new classrooms with the newest technology. The students and teachers have spent the last two weeks getting used to the new facilities which have an enrollment of 460 students but can accommodate 600. The 95,000 square foot two story campus began its transformation two years ago. Architect Mike Marshall of Sam Marshall Architects in Pensacola like others on the tour are proud of the media center. "The media center is the big thing." Marshall said. "It's got such a great view and a lot of daylight. We just wanted it to be as big, open and bright as it could be." The 37-foot high ceilings and wall of exterior windows are the show piece of the school. Although the second floor windows over looking the football field attract a lot of attention and joking about the possibility of being box seats for the football games.
