USS Independence will host media tours Friday at Pensacola NAS

USS Independence (LCS-2) will host a media availability at 2 p.m. Feb. 20 at Allegheny Pier at Pensacola Naval Air Station. Independence is the first ship of the Independence variant of Littoral Combat Ship Class. LCS is a high-speed, shallow draft multimission ships designed to operate independently or with a strike group. U.S. Navy's website says the ship is designed to defeat asymmetric "anti-access" threats such as mines, quiet diesel submarines and fast surface craft. They are designed to operate near shore, but also may operate in open water. The ship is home ported in San Diego, CA and was constructed by team member Austal USA in Mobile.
