Who will be Pensacola’s Sportsman of the Year and Volunteer of the year?
The winners will be revealed at the the COX Pensacola Sports Association annual Awards Banquet on March 18 at the Sanders Beach Community Center at 6:30 p.m.
This year’s guest speaker is former Alabama running back and NFL standout Shaun Alexander. Alexander had a storied NFL career, in which he broke and set many records earning him numerous awards including the Offensive Player of the Year (2005), Pro-Bowl selection (3 times), NFL MVP (2005), and being named to the NFL 2000’s All-Decade Team, among others. Today he travels the country speaking.
More than 30 individuals and teams will be recognized for their performances in the 2014 seasons. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for a reception prior to dinner.
Taking home the top awards of the evening will be Bubba Watson, (Professional Athlete of the Year), Bruno Savi (Co-Amateur Athlete of the Year) and Korina Rosario (Co-Amateur Athlete of the Year).
Doug Baldwin, Josh Sitton and Buck Showalter will receive a Special Recognition Award.
Being inducted into the PSA Hall of Fame are Tom Fruitticher and Bill Vilona.
Fruitticher is a nationally recognized professional in the Japan Shotokan Karate Association. He won numerous national and international competitions throughout his 30-year career. He founded the Coastal Shotokan Karate Association and teaches karate at Bayview Center and the Gulf Breeze Recreation Center.
Vilona has covered the Pensacola area sports scene as a member of the Pensacola News Journal staff for nearly 30 years. Vilona has covered it all from high school sports, the area’s pro athletes, college, UWF, PSC, Blue Wahoos, Ice Flyers, features, and much more.
A complete list of award winners is below. The only two awards that are unknown to the recipients and will be announced at the banquet are the Sportsman of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.
