The No. 30 West Florida baseball team handed No. 10 Alabama Huntsville its second loss of the season in a 4-2 win at Jim Spooner Field on Sunday. The Argonauts avoided being swept with the win on Sunday, and the team improved to 15-9 overall and 9-6 in Gulf South Conference play. UAH dropped to 14-2-1, 10-2-1 with the loss. “I’m really proud of my team today,” said UWF head coach Mike Jeffcoat. “As a coach you look for that fight and that ability to not give up. We’ve been pushing for that. We played good baseball yesterday; we pitched and played defense, but we just couldn’t execute on offense. We challenged them to get over that hump today. I’m disappointed that we lost two of three at home, but it was a big win for us today to get something out of the weekend.” The Argos held the UAH lineup to just two runs for the third straight game, and Jarrod Petree (Apopka, Fla.) led the way. The right-hander (3-0) pitched six-plus innings while scattering nine hits and one walk. UAH did have baserunners against Petree, but he escaped multiple jams and limited the Chargers to two runs. Reed Bright (Pelham, Ala.) pitched two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings. Bright also got some help from his defense, as the seventh inning ended on a strikeout-caught stealing double play and the eighth ended on a double play started by shortstop Alex Greene (Orlando, Fla.). Greene had a big game overall, hitting 2-for-4 at the plate and making multiple key plays on defense. Ronnie May (Apopka, Fla.) pitched a perfect ninth inning with three straight groundouts to earn his fourth save of the year. UAH opened the scoring in the third inning on a bases loaded single by Chandler Brock, but Petree retired the next batter to limit the damage. The Chargers added another run in the fifth on an RBI single by Ryan Barnes. The Argos rallied for three runs in the fifth despite only two hits in the inning. The first run came in on an RBI groundout by Lee Dunnam (Maitland, Fla.), the second on a sacrifice fly by Nic Strasser (Orlando, Fla.), and the third scored on a wild pitch. UWF added a fourth run in the seventh on an RBI single by Greene. UWF will head to West Georgia for their next GSC series on March 21-22. For information on all UWF athletics, visit www.GoArgos.com.
