One of downtown Pensacola's longest running restaurants is temporarily closing to remodel. The Dog House Deli is shutting down after Gallery Night on April 17 and will be closed for three months. The owner says the upgrade at the Palafox Place location is long overdue. "The building has been here since the late 1800s," said owner Jim Holler, "and we still have a lot of the same infrastructure. Our goal is to add new products, but keep the same character and nourish what we have." [caption id="attachment_21524" align="alignleft" width="300"]The Dog House Deli, 30 S. It was badly damaged in last spring's torrential rains, which left the floor and bathrooms in rough shape. The Elebash family of Elebash's Jewelers owns the property and is handling most of the renovations. The upgrades include new bathrooms, lighting and infrastructure, plus new rustic-style tables and chairs. Holler is most excited about the new kitchen. The family-run restaurant has a location on Pensacola Beach, but the downtown spot launched from a tiny kitchen in 1977 when there were only six restaurants downtown. "We've just winged this for 37 years," Holler says. "We'll have a real kitchen and we're really going to beef up breakfast." Holler eventually may add to the staff of four and move toward late-night hours. "Unfortunately we've got to close in the middle of the summer, which is not the best time because we stay so busy," Holler said, "but we've already had a great first quarter. Gallery Night is the last hurrah for us for a few months, (so) we'll do it up big!"
