West Florida resumes GSC play by hosting Mississippi College

The University of West Florida softball team returns home April 3-4 to continue its Gulf South Conference play when they host Mississippi College Friday and Saturday. The Argonauts (11-24, 5-15 GSC) will begin the three game series with a single game on Friday and then will play a doubleheader on Saturday. UWF will host Military Appreciation Day sponsored by Whataburger and UWF Army ROTC on Saturday, April 4. After UWF’s GSC series with Mississippi College, the Argos will host Albany State on Wednesday, April 8 for a non-conference doubleheader. Previewing Mississippi College Mississippi College enters the weekend with a 20-12 (11-9 GSC) record so far this season and are currently sitting in sixth in the GSC standings, but due to the reclassification process, they are not eligible for the postseason. The Lady Choctaws last played on Wednesday, April 1 where they swept a doubleheader against NAIA opponent Belhaven University. Mississippi College currently has seven student-athletes who are batting above .300 and are paced by senior Brooke Smitherman who leads the team with a .393 average (33-for-84) and four doubles, two homeruns, and 20 RBI. Leading the Lady Choctaws in the circle is junior Carlie Sargent who has compiled a 14-5 record this season and a 2.34 ERA in 20 appearances. She has thrown eight complete games this season with two shutouts and has totaled 91 strikeouts to just 19 walks. Previewing Albany State The Argos will once again face an opponent from the Southern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference for a midweek match-up. This time UWF will host Albany State University on Wednesday, April 8 for a doubleheader at 4 p.m. CT. The Golden Rams (12-19, 10-2 SIAC) won’t see any competition from now until April 8 and last played on March 31 where they got swept in a doubleheader against Brewton Parker College.
