Leadership tip: delivering difficult messages

The toughest thing we have in any situation is communicating something that’s a little bit uncomfortable.

It helps to understand that different people have different perceptions of a situation. If you’re going to deliver a difficult note, first of all say, “this is my perception.” That means you own it.

You can even cushion it by saying, “you might not be aware of this, because if you were aware, I don’t think it would be happening.” That gives the person an exit strategy.
