When Daniel Eckert was a teenager, he read “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac and “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer.
“That nomadic lifestyle appealed to me so when I was 16, I bought left home and went on the road hopping trains and riding the rails from city to city,” he says. “Since it is not lawful to ride on freight trains, I stay hidden then hop onto them as they begin moving. It is a dangerous practice, so I do not recommend it!
“Hitchhiking is an option for me too, but if you try it in a bad area you get a shoe thrown at you or get mooned."
How many years have you been on the road?
"It has been a total of nearly six. I took a break for a while and went to college, but the road was calling me. I have been to 31 states so far and I am making my way to South Florida and up the east coast.
“I do not panhandle for money because I know people do not like that. I play my ukulele and work at restaurants and save my money for the road. I talk to my mom on the phone often and she always offers to buy me a plane or bus ticket home, but I follow the words of Jack Kerouac:
‘There was nowhere to go but everywhere, so just keep rolling under the stars.’”
